Marc Cucurella has once again emerged strongly on FC Barcelona’s agenda this summer. The blaugrana club are in the race for the Chelsea full-back. His possible arrival would be directly linked to a deep reorganisation of the left side of the defence.
Barça have not closed any operation yet, but Deco is already working on several defensive scenarios. Hansi Flick wants a more physical, competitive squad capable of handling the full calendar. In that context, Cucurella appears as a profile with experience, intensity and knowledge of the club.
The file also connects with the future of Alejandro Balde, who no longer seems untouchable. The academy player remains important, but Barça would be willing to listen to very significant offers. If a major proposal arrives, the sporting department could study a strategic sale.
Cucurella gains strength on the list
Cucurella fits because of his ability to play as a left-back and also as a wing-back. His energy, defensive aggression and Premier League experience are highly valued in the market. He also knows the blaugrana environment after spending time at La Masia before developing elsewhere.
The player has reportedly asked to leave Chelsea after a difficult season for the London club. The lack of Champions League football could push several players to consider new destinations this summer. For Cucurella, returning to Spain would be an attractive option on both sporting and family levels.
Chelsea, however, will not give away a player for whom they paid a huge fee. In England, there is talk of an operation that could range between €45 million and €55 million. That figure forces Barça to generate margin before thinking about a real offensive.
Balde holds the key
Cucurella’s arrival would depend largely on what happens with Alejandro Balde. The Barça left-back has a long contract and an enormous release clause, but he also has a strong market. His pace, youth and projection remain highly valued by several major European clubs.
Barça do not want to rush a decision involving a homegrown player who is still very young. However, his season reportedly did not fully meet internal expectations in terms of consistency. That is why a powerful offer could open a debate that looked impossible only months ago.
Selling Balde would allow the club to finance a significant part of the Cucurella operation. It would also create margin for other defensive and attacking moves Deco is working on. Even so, losing such a powerful academy product would carry both emotional and sporting costs.
Atlético also appear
Barça are not alone in this race, because Atlético Madrid are also following Cucurella. The red-and-white club want to reinforce the left-back position and value his competitive character highly. That competition could speed things up if Chelsea decide to listen to formal offers.
Atlético could offer him an important role and immediate continuity in LaLiga. Barça, meanwhile, have the emotional appeal of a possible return home. The player’s decision could prove decisive if the financial proposals end up being similar.
There is also the Jorge Mendes factor, connected to several important market files. His role could be important if Balde, Cucurella and other defensive movements end up linked. In Barcelona, they know that this summer one operation can immediately drag another with it.
Deco prepares the change
Deco wants alternatives ready before making a final decision on the left-back position. Cucurella is not the only name being followed, but he is one of the most proven. His arrival would bring immediate experience and a different competitive edge to that area of the pitch.
Flick needs full-backs capable of playing big matches without losing aggression or defensive focus. Cucurella offers that character, as well as energy and strong tactical reading. For a Barça side that wants to compete in the Champions League, that profile is very interesting.
The outcome will depend on sales, the final price and the player’s will in the coming weeks. Balde is not out yet, but his future already conditions a very important operation. And that is the twist: Cucurella could return to Barça if Balde moves first.
Caution note: This article is based on reports from The Athletic, Barça Blaugranes and current market speculation. At the time of writing, there is no official agreement between FC Barcelona, Chelsea and Marc Cucurella.
