FC Barcelona have set their eyes on Manchester City to strengthen two important areas. The blaugrana club remain attentive to Joško Gvardiol and also to Bernardo Silva. They are two very different operations, but both fit the idea of raising the team’s competitive level.
Gvardiol’s case responds to a top-level defensive need for Hansi Flick. The Croatian appears as one of the major wishes to reinforce the back line. His ability to play as both centre-back and left-back makes him a very attractive profile.
Bernardo Silva’s route, on the other hand, has more of a market-opportunity feeling. The Portuguese midfielder is out of contract and could arrive for free after closing his City chapter. At Barça, they understand that signing a player like him without a transfer fee could be an unrepeatable opportunity.
Gvardiol, the almost impossible signing Barça love
Gvardiol represents exactly the type of defender Barça want to compete in Europe. He is young, physical, powerful, quick and used to defending large spaces far from his own box. He also has strong build-up ability and experience in high-level international matches.
The operation, however, would be extremely complicated because of the player’s contractual weight. Manchester City paid a very high fee to sign him from RB Leipzig. That means any exit would require a huge investment and a very creative payment structure.
According to the information published, City could value him at around €75 million. That remains a very high figure for a Barça side that must carefully measure every economic move. Even so, Deco does not want to lose sight of the opportunity if an unexpected opening appears.
Bernardo, a different kind of opportunity
The Bernardo Silva file moves under different parameters inside Barça’s planning. It would not be a huge transfer-fee operation, but rather a free signing with an important salary. That difference allows Barça to study it from a much more flexible angle.
The Portuguese has been linked with a blaugrana move for years and now appears closer than ever. According to SER Catalunya, the club have accelerated for Bernardo and the player prioritises Barcelona. His desire could be key against financially stronger proposals from other clubs.
The big debate is his sporting fit in an already crowded midfield. Flick has Pedri, Gavi, Frenkie de Jong, Fermín López, Marc Casadó and Marc Bernal in the squad. Even so, Bernardo would bring composure, experience, final pass quality and immediate European hierarchy.
Two operations, one message
The fact Barça are looking at two City players shows the ambition of the new project. Gvardiol would be a huge bet to secure the defence for many years. Bernardo, meanwhile, would be an intelligent move to add quality without paying a transfer fee.
The club cannot take on every operation at the same time without first organising exits. Gvardiol’s arrival would clearly depend on financial margin and important movements in defence. Bernardo’s would be more linked to salary, signing bonus and Flick’s final approval.
There is also a clear difference in urgency. Gvardiol only makes sense if Barça decide to make a major defensive investment. Bernardo could become an opportunity even if the squad already has many midfielders.
City could shape Barça’s summer
Manchester City now appear as an indirect actor in Barça’s market. They could lose Bernardo for free and, at the same time, receive interest in Gvardiol. That situation turns the English club into an unexpected protagonist of blaugrana planning.
For Flick, both names would make sense from very different perspectives. Gvardiol would raise Barça’s physical and defensive ceiling on big European nights. Bernardo would add control, experience and associative talent in the final third.
Barça know it will not be easy to turn those interests into real signings this summer. One operation looks extremely expensive and the other requires convincing the coach while fitting the salary structure. But the twist is clear: Barça are looking at City to take another step forward.
