Julian Ryerson has emerged as a serious option for FC Barcelona as the club look to strengthen the right-back position this summer. Recent reporting says Borussia Dortmund would be open to listening to offers of around €30 million for the Norway international, a figure that has quickly made him an intriguing market opportunity for Barça.
The move stands out for several reasons. Barcelona have been assessing the possibility of bringing in real competition for Jules Koundé on the right side, and Ryerson offers a very different profile from other names linked with the club. He brings experience, reliability and physical intensity, all traits that fit well with the kind of demands usually associated with Hansi Flick’s system. The point about tactical fit is an inference based on Ryerson’s profile and Barça’s reported need.
His season in Germany has also been extremely strong. Official Bundesliga statistics show that Ryerson has played 23 league matches and provided 12 assists in the 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign, which is a remarkable return for a full-back and a clear sign of how much attacking weight he is carrying for Dortmund this year.
That is also why it is important to be precise with the numbers. Some summaries have circulated with a higher assist total, but the official Bundesliga record currently lists him on 12 assists in the league, which is the figure that should be used.
Why his profile is so attractive
Ryerson is not the most glamorous name on the market, but he is the kind of player coaches tend to value highly. He can cover both full-back roles, offers intensity and repeated running power, and official Bundesliga data places him among the season’s standout performers for sprints, intensive runs and attacking output from wide areas. He has logged 280 sprints, 1,277 intensive runs, and 75 crosses, underlining just how active he is up and down the flank.
His versatility adds even more value. Although he is primarily a right-back, he has frequently been described in reporting as a player capable of covering multiple defensive functions, which is especially useful for a squad looking for depth, immediate performance and tactical flexibility. That final part is an inference from his profile and usage.
Another point in his favour is that he is already a finished player, not a developmental gamble. Ryerson is 28 years old, his contract runs until 30 June 2028, and Transfermarkt values him at €20 million, even though the reported asking price is clearly higher than that public valuation.
The big issue: this would not really be a bargain
Even if €30 million sounds like an opportunity in today’s market, this would not exactly be a cheap deal for Barcelona. Dortmund are under no obligation to sell, and with Ryerson tied down until 2028, they would only open the door if they felt the offer truly reflected his current value and importance.
That is where the real difficulty appears for Barça. The club would not only have to decide whether Ryerson is a genuine priority, but also contend with interest from other teams. Recent reporting has linked Manchester United, Liverpool and Newcastle with the Norwegian, which could make the operation more competitive and drive the price even higher.
So for now, what exists is a genuinely interesting market scenario. Julian Ryerson fits the profile, his season supports the hype, and Dortmund may be willing to sell at the right price. But if Barcelona want to turn that interest into a real transfer, they will have to decide quickly whether €30 million is a true opportunity or simply too much to pay for a full-back, even one who currently looks like a strong fit because of his energy, reliability and tactical usefulness.
