Barcelona are already working on an alternative plan in case the Alessandro Bastoni route becomes blocked this summer. According to the information shared, Cristian “Cuti” Romero is the big plan B being considered by the club. It is not a coincidence, because his profile fits the idea of adding immediate hierarchy to the defence.
Cuti Romero is 28 years old, plays for Tottenham, is a full Argentina international and has a contract until June 2029. His market value is also around €50 million, which shows this would not be a cheap or simple operation. Even so, Barça see him as a centre-back ready to perform immediately.
The logic of the move is quite clear inside the club. If Bastoni is the ideal option for his left foot, ball-playing ability and tactical fit, Romero offers another route. He brings character, aggression, elite experience and a competitive edge from the first day.
Flick wants hierarchy
Romero’s profile fits well with an idea increasingly repeated around Hansi Flick. The coach wants players with more leadership, experience and the ability to handle big matches under pressure. That is where the Argentine defender scores very highly.
His situation at Tottenham could also make his name gain more weight in the market. The London club are going through a very difficult season, which could open important movements this summer. If the project shakes, several big names could listen to other options.
That scenario interests Barça, although the operation would remain complex because of his contract and competition. Romero is not close to ending his deal and remains highly rated across Europe. His signing would only gain serious strength if the Bastoni file cools completely.
Bastoni remains ahead, but Romero pushes
Right now, Bastoni is still Barcelona’s priority, but the club do not want to be left without top-level alternatives. Cuti Romero offers a different solution, perhaps less elegant on the ball, but much more aggressive. That makes him a very serious plan B, not just an emergency option.
The conclusion inside Barça’s offices is becoming quite clear. If Bastoni does not arrive, the name gaining strength is Cristian Romero. And if the market opens even a small crack at Tottenham, Deco already knows exactly where to look.
