Julián Álvarez remains FC Barcelona’s great dream to strengthen the attack. The blaugrana club reportedly plan one final offensive after the 2026 World Cup. The proposal could reach €150 million if certain variables are eventually met.
The idea being discussed would start from a fixed base of €135 million. Bonuses would then be added to push the operation towards a historic figure. Deco and Hansi Flick see the Argentine as the ideal attacking leader.
Barça prepare their big move
Barça already know signing Julián will not be simple or quick. Atlético Madrid remain very firm and do not want easy negotiations. However, Barcelona believe a real window could open after the World Cup.
The sporting department believe the Argentine has exactly what the team needs. He brings movement, goals, pressing, character and experience in major international matches. He is not just a striker, but a complete attacker for Flick’s model.
Barça have worked on the operation with patience, caution and internal tension. The first approach was not enough to move Atlético from their position. Now, the final offensive would be much bigger and far more forceful.
Atlético do not want to sell their star
Atlético have Julián Álvarez tied down until 2030 with a huge clause. That situation allows the club to negotiate from a position of total strength. Internally, they also see the Argentine as a strategic piece of their project.
At the Metropolitano, they do not want to show weakness before Barça. They also know selling the striker would be a major blow to fans. Any proposal would need to be almost impossible to reject.
The World Cup could make the operation even harder for Barcelona. If Julián has a great tournament, his value could rise quickly. But Barça also believe the player could define his future after the competition.
Flick wants a differential number nine
The main reason behind this offensive is Barça’s need for a franchise striker. The club want an attacker capable of making differences for several years. Flick sees Julián as a perfect mix of sacrifice, aggression and goals.
The exit of Robert Lewandowski has left a huge gap in attacking planning. Barça need a present number nine, but also a forward for the future. That is why the Argentine appears ahead of younger or riskier alternatives.
Names like Junior Kroupi or João Pedro remain secondary options on the list. However, none generate the same sporting unanimity inside the club as Julián. Barça’s feeling is clear: they want to push everything before changing plan.
An operation that could break the summer
The problem will be fitting such a huge investment into Barça’s financial reality. The club must control Fair Play, close exits and organise several pending files. A €150 million offer would demand very precise and ambitious financial engineering.
Deco knows this operation would define the entire market and condition other moves. But he also understands that signing Julián would change the team’s competitive dimension. The Argentine would bring hierarchy, high pressing and constant threat in every competition.
The outcome will depend on the World Cup, Atlético and the player’s real will. Barça are preparing their strongest blow, but they know the wall is enormous. The twist is clear: if Julián pushes and Atlético listen, the summer could end with a historic bombshell.
Caution note: At the time of writing, there is no official agreement between Barça, Atlético Madrid and Julián Álvarez.
