FC Barcelona are already preparing for a decisive summer in attack, and although the club’s main objective remains very clear, they do not want to be left without alternatives. The priority is still Julián Álvarez, the striker Barça see as the ideal long-term leader of the frontline. But recent reporting has also placed Victor Osimhen on the club’s radar as a serious alternative if the Argentine deal proves impossible.
The logic behind that strategy is easy to understand. Barcelona know that signing Julián would be extremely difficult because of his market value, Atlético’s stance and the complexity of negotiating for such a high-profile player. That is why the sporting department are not limiting themselves to only one scenario. Inside the club, the idea is to push first for the main target, but to keep another elite option ready in case the first plan collapses.
Julián Álvarez is still the big dream
Julián Álvarez remains the name Barça like most to lead the attack for the next era. The club believe his profile fits perfectly with what they want from the new number nine: mobility, pressing, link-up play and goals. He is seen as a striker who can offer both immediate quality and long-term growth, which is why he continues to sit at the top of the list.
At the same time, Barcelona know this is not a straightforward operation. The move would require important financial adjustments and probably other market decisions around the squad. That is exactly why the club are trying to avoid being trapped if the deal becomes impossible.
Victor Osimhen appears as the alternative
That is where Victor Osimhen enters the picture. Recent reporting says the Nigerian striker has been added to the list of forwards Barça are considering, even if he is not the first-choice option right now. His profile is different from Julián’s, but he still offers qualities that make him highly attractive: power, depth, penalty-box presence and proven finishing ability.
Osimhen would represent a more classic centre-forward solution. He is a pure No. 9, a striker capable of stretching defences and deciding matches inside the area. That makes him a very valuable alternative, especially if Barça decide they want a more direct attacking reference. The key point, though, is that he currently appears more as a Plan B than as the operation the club are fully prioritising today. That last distinction is an inference based on current reporting, which strongly positions Julián as the main target while only recently placing Osimhen among the alternatives.
A summer that will be shaped by the attack
Barcelona’s attacking planning is going to be one of the biggest stories of the summer. The club want to make a real leap in quality up front and are willing to make important decisions to do it. Having a fallback option like Osimhen means Barça do not have to remain paralysed if the Julián operation fails.
So the roadmap now looks quite clear. First, Barça will try to make Julián Álvarez happen. If that door closes, Victor Osimhen is one of the top names ready to move into the foreground.
