Barcelona are still looking for a decisive striker for next season, and João Pedro has gained major weight on the club’s list. The interest is real, with several recent reports agreeing that the Brazilian is highly rated inside Barça. The problem is that Chelsea consider him an important player and do not want to make his exit easy.
This change of focus makes sense within the market the sporting department are currently handling. Julián Álvarez remains Barça’s great dream, but PSG’s pressure and the price of that operation have pushed the club to assess other attacking routes. In that scenario, João Pedro appears as a top-level alternative for Deco and Hansi Flick’s new attack.
This is not an improvised name or a last-minute idea. Several reports point to Deco having followed the player for some time, with even a possible meeting with his agent to explore the situation. That does not mean the signing is close, but it does show Barça’s interest is much more serious than it first seemed.
Flick wants mobility, pressing and goals
What Barça like most about João Pedro is that he does not fit the mould of a static striker. He can play as a number nine, move wide, drop inside and participate in attacking construction. That type of forward fits very well with Flick’s desire for more mobility, high pressing and aggression.
His recent performances in England also matter a lot. Recent reports credit him with around 20 goals in his season with Chelsea, reinforcing the feeling that he is ready for more responsibility. At 24 years old, he would not be a short-term patch, but a bet for several seasons.
That is why his name has climbed so quickly in Barça’s internal list. The club want a striker who can offer more than finishing inside the box. João Pedro brings movement, energy and a different attacking rhythm.
Chelsea are the great wall
This is where the operation truly explodes for Barcelona. João Pedro signed with Chelsea until 2033, so the London club have total control of the situation. Chelsea also paid an initial fee close to €63.7 million, plus add-ons, and are not under pressure to sell one year later.
For that reason, while some reports place the operation closer to €70 million or €75 million, others already suggest it could rise towards €100 million. That would depend on Chelsea’s stance, bonuses and how hard they decide to negotiate. It perfectly explains why Barça see him as a top option, but also a very heavy financial file.
The salary is another important factor. Capology estimates João Pedro’s 2025/26 fixed gross salary at £6.5 million per year, around £125,000 per week, with a long contract still ahead. That would force Barça to calculate the full cost very carefully.
A top signing with a superstar price
Barcelona could only seriously attempt this deal with sales, salary margin and a carefully structured payment plan. Without that context, entering a real negotiation for one of the Premier League’s best-protected forwards would be almost impossible.
The conclusion at Camp Nou seems quite evident. João Pedro is highly rated, fits what Flick wants and is seen by Deco as a top-level option. But if Barça want to close this move, they will have to face a superstar operation, because transfer fee, salary and Chelsea’s resistance could take the deal close to €100 million.
