Julián Álvarez has become one of the biggest names of the next summer market. Barcelona still see him as the ideal striker to lead their new attacking era, but the scenario has become even more demanding in recent days. According to different reports, Arsenal have gained presence in the race for the Argentine and now join a battle that also includes PSG and Barça.
The situation is especially worrying for Atlético Madrid, who have him tied down until 2030 after making his signing official in August 2024. The Madrid club presented him as a versatile, quick attacker capable of also playing behind the striker. That profile explains perfectly why half of Europe have him on their agenda.
Atlético already feel the pressure
Cadena SER explained that inside Atlético there is a feeling that Julián’s future is not completely guaranteed. According to that information, the club know the player’s camp has held contacts with Barça, Arsenal and PSG. Several directors even believe the striker could want to leave this summer.
That does not mean Atlético will make an exit easy. Quite the opposite. The same report points to his €500 million release clause and explains that, if a negotiation opens, the starting price would be clearly above €100 million.
In other words, Atlético still hold all the power. They want to turn any possible operation into a historic transfer. And that makes Barça’s dream extremely complicated from the very beginning.
Barça want him, but not an auction
At Camp Nou, Julián Álvarez remains one of the most exciting names to replace Robert Lewandowski. His fit is loved because of his mobility, pressing, goals and ability to play in several attacking roles. The problem is that Barça have already made clear internally that they do not want to enter an uncontrolled bidding war.
That detail is key because it leaves Barça in a delicate position against financially stronger rivals. Cadena SER also explained that, if the Argentine wants to wear blaugrana, more than sporting interest will be needed. Barça will need a clear signal from the player and conditions that reduce the complexity of the operation.
Without that gesture, everything becomes much harder. Atlético will not lower the price easily, and PSG have far more financial strength. Arsenal’s entry only adds more pressure to an already very difficult file.
Arsenal enter, but England is not his favourite route
Arsenal’s emergence adds even more pressure to the situation. Fichajes.net claims the English club have entered the race strongly and that their presence could push the price even higher. Competitively, the Premier League option makes sense because of Mikel Arteta’s project and Arsenal’s financial power.
However, there is one important detail that cools that route slightly. Cadena SER reported that, although there have been contacts with Arsenal, the Argentine is not in favour of moving to England right now. That does not rule Arsenal out completely, but it places them in a different position from PSG or even Barça on the sporting side.
That point gives Barça a small window of hope. If Julián prioritises a sporting project over the biggest offer, the Catalan club can still stay alive. But they will need the player to move clearly in that direction.
A long and increasingly expensive battle
The conclusion around Barça is becoming quite clear. Julián Álvarez remains the great dream, but the operation no longer depends only on sporting desire. Atlético have him protected, PSG are pushing hard and Arsenal have added more noise to a race that was already extremely difficult.
Right now, Barça remain alive in the fight, but they need two things to truly compete: financial margin and a clear gesture from the player. Without that, the signing that excites Camp Nou the most could also become the hardest operation of the summer.
Caution note: this situation is based on Cadena SER and Fichajes.net reports, not an official negotiation completed between Barcelona, Atlético Madrid or Arsenal.
