Bernardo Silva has produced an unexpected twist in FC Barcelona’s transfer market. According to Esport3, the Portuguese midfielder is now closer to Atlético Madrid than to the blaugrana club. The news completely changes an operation that seemed to be on track only a few days ago.
Barça had advanced significantly in talks with the player and his entourage. In fact, several reports had placed the agreement between both parties as practically complete. However, people close to the player now consider the Barça option to be ruled out.
The scenario is especially striking because Bernardo had dreamed for years of wearing the blaugrana shirt. His departure from Manchester City opened a very attractive market opportunity for Deco. But the need to sell before signing has ended up complicating a deal that once looked very favourable.
Atlético move ahead
Atlético Madrid have moved quickly while Barça tried to buy time. The red-and-white club had a proposal on the table and were pushing to close the deal as soon as possible. Now, according to Esport3, that insistence has clearly placed them ahead of Barça.
Cadena SER had already reported that Atlético remained optimistic about signing Bernardo. The outlet explained that the Portuguese midfielder was exploring options in Spain and had several proposals open. It also suggested that his final decision could be delayed by the World Cup context.
Atlético can offer a competitive project, La Liga football and an important role from day one. For Bernardo, those factors could carry major weight if Barça cannot act quickly. The blaugrana problem is that the operation depended on exits that have still not arrived.
Barça lose strength
The file looked very advanced because the player and the club had fully moved closer. Mundo Deportivo and other outlets had reported that Bernardo preferred to wait for Barça. But that margin has narrowed and left the operation in a very delicate position.
Barça Blaugranes reports that the club’s interest has cooled due to important internal doubts. The information points to scepticism from key figures inside the club, including the sporting and technical areas. That change has allowed Atlético to gain ground in a race that once seemed blaugrana.
The deal always had important small print despite involving no transfer fee. Bernardo could arrive for free, but his salary and possible signing bonus required space on the wage bill. Without previous sales, Deco could not close the operation as quickly as the player needed.
Flick and Deco change the board
The sporting fit has also been an important part of the whole story. Bernardo offers experience, composure, final pass and huge competitive intelligence in different positions. But Barça already have a very crowded midfield and several open priorities.
Pedri, Gavi, Frenkie de Jong, Fermín López, Marc Bernal and Marc Casadó occupy a huge amount of competitive space. The club are also still looking for resources for attacking signings and defensive adjustments this summer. That has made Bernardo’s signing less automatic than it once appeared.
Atlético, by contrast, can offer him a more direct need inside their squad. Diego Simeone needs talent between the lines, leadership and experience to raise the level of his team. That clarity could end up tilting the balance if Barça do not react quickly.
A twist that hurts Barça
The Bernardo case perfectly sums up Barça’s difficulties when trying to close market opportunities. Having an agreement with the player is not always enough when Financial Fair Play continues to condition everything. The club can convince a player, but then it needs real space to formalise the move.
The operation has not been announced by Atlético and is not fully closed yet, but the scenario has changed significantly. A few days ago, Barça seemed to have the advantage because of the Portuguese midfielder’s long-standing desire. Now, his entourage reportedly sees that option as practically ruled out.
The final outcome will still depend on Bernardo’s decision and the timing of the market. But the blow for Deco is clear if Atlético end up taking the Portuguese star. And that is the twist: Barça had the agreement, but Atlético may end up getting the signing.
Caution note: This article is based on reports from Esport3, Cadena SER, Mundo Deportivo, Barça Blaugranes and current market speculation. At the time of writing, there is no official agreement announced between Bernardo Silva and Atlético Madrid.
