Barcelona are still reviewing alternatives to strengthen their defence, and Jon Martín remains very present on the list. According to the information shared, Deco has also valued his signing for this coming summer. The centre-back is liked for his potential, projection and room to grow, but he does not lead the race right now.
Inside the club, they consider him a player with very interesting conditions to develop at a high level. However, they also understand that he is not yet ready to offer an immediate jump in defence. That detail matters a lot in a season where Flick wants much stronger solutions.
The price also shapes the internal reading of this operation inside the Barça offices. Jon Martín would be valued at around €20 million, an important figure for his current situation. That forces the club to ask whether it is worth investing now or waiting for another context.
Liked for the future, not urgency
Barcelona do not doubt that he is a centre-back with a lot of development still ahead. His name is liked because he represents a young, serious bet with clear room for competitive growth. He also fits that market line where Deco looks for talent before it fully explodes.
The problem is that Barça’s defence needs more than just a very promising player. After a season with too many doubts at the back, the club want a centre-back who can command now. That is where Jon Martín loses strength against more developed and forceful profiles.
That internal comparison with other names makes his current position quite clear. The club believe he cannot yet offer the immediate impact of Bastoni or Cuti Romero. Both represent hierarchy, elite experience and a much stronger presence from the first day.
Bastoni and Cuti remain ahead
The defensive priority remains focused on profiles capable of immediately raising the team’s competitive level. Bastoni fits because of his ball-playing ability, hierarchy and ideal adaptation to Flick’s football. Cuti Romero, meanwhile, convinces through aggression, leadership and experience in big matches.
Compared with them, Jon Martín appears more like a medium-term construction bet. That does not mean Barça do not view him very positively in their general planning. It simply means he does not currently answer the most urgent summer need.
The €20 million fee also forces the club to measure the operation very carefully. It is not a small amount for a player who is not yet considered ready to lead immediately. With Financial Fair Play still pressing, Barcelona cannot afford many mistakes in that range.
Deco controls him, but does not accelerate
The conclusion inside the club seems quite clear with this defensive file on the table. Jon Martín is liked, valued and seen as a player with very high potential for the future. But he is not the centre-back currently viewed as ideal to transform the defence immediately.
That is why, while Bastoni and Cuti Romero remain ahead, his operation loses a lot of strength. Deco keeps him under control as an interesting option, but not as the main bet. Right now, Barça value Jon Martín, although they do not see him ready to be the great defensive signing.
