Andreas Christensen is much closer to staying at Barcelona than leaving this summer. Although there is still no definitive agreement, both sides have brought their positions much closer. Right now, inside the club, there is a growing feeling that he will renew soon.
Just a few weeks ago, the Danish centre-back rejected the first offer he received from Barça. That proposal did not fully convince him, especially because of the new salary conditions. However, the scenario has changed, and talks are now moving in a much more positive direction.
At this stage, continuity until June 2028 is gaining more and more strength. It is not closed yet, but it is no longer seen as a distant possibility inside the Barça offices. On the contrary, it is starting to look like the most likely outcome.
Christensen prioritises Barcelona
Despite having more powerful financial offers from other European clubs, Christensen has always prioritised Barça. The defender and his family feel very comfortable in the city and within the club’s structure. That personal factor has weighed much more than money throughout the negotiation.
That explains why the centre-back has never broken talks with the club. His intention was never to rush out, but to find a reasonable agreement to continue. Now, with both sides closer, the renewal is once again seen as a very real option.
Hansi Flick also values his profile in a squad that needs experience. The coach appreciates his versatility, tactical reading and ability to play in different roles. That is why, if he accepted a salary reduction, the club were ready to keep him in the project.
Injuries have slowed his prominence
Christensen’s main problem in the last two seasons has not been his footballing level. It has mainly been the lack of continuity caused by several physical issues. That has prevented him from having the weight expected since his arrival.
This season, for example, he has only been able to feature in 17 official matches for Barça. He has played in LaLiga, Champions League and Copa del Rey, but with limited presence. In fact, he only started once in the cup match against Guadalajara.
Even so, the club have not forgotten everything he has contributed since arriving in 2022. He joined as a free agent from Chelsea and helped Barça even in delicate registration moments. That commitment also explains why the sporting department wanted to keep counting on him.
The agreement is getting closer
If he finally stays, Christensen will not keep the high salary he had until now. The renewal would involve a clearly lower wage, much more adjusted to the club’s new context. That was the main point of friction and the reason why everything slowed down.
Now, however, Barça and the player see the situation with much more optimism. Positions have moved closer, the desire to continue exists and Flick also approves his continuity. Unless there is an unexpected twist, Christensen is one of the players closest to signing a new Barça deal.
