Squad Status : The Barcelona Midfield 2021/22

Since 2010 and later Sergio Busquets has played a prominent role in the club’s success. Barcelona thrived with Sergio playing as a central defensive midfielder also known as CDM. So we didn’t really need any CDM. But age is catching up to Sergio Busquets and unfortunately he isn’t the same. Barcelona will need to look at other options.

FRENKIE 

De Jong arrived in Barcelona to replace Sergio. But as you all know that’s not where Frenkie is thriving for the team. It’s important that Frankie plays centrally so Barcelona can maintain the balance but as a back up CDM De Jong can be great.

PJANIC

Pjanic came in as a Swap deal player from Juventus in 2020. This season Pjanic has failed to perform and it’s not like Koeman has put any trust whatsoever in Pjanic which in turn has made this a complicated situation. Pjanic is likely to depart from Camp nou it’s only to be seen if it will be as a loan or transfer.

Barca B

NICOLAS GONZALEZ

Nico is a great prospect from Barcelona B and has played a special part in engineering a great system with Pimenta in the lower divisions, The player  just some weeks ago renewed his contract with Barcelona, It is widely reported that He will do pre-season with the Senior team and get some game time.

Nico is the nearest to Sergio Busquets. Gonzalez has good passing, Agility and some interesting touches. There is no outstanding weakness seen in Nico. 

Any chance Barcelona will go for a player this summer?

Barcelona is having a lot of economical problems since the start of 2020 so we can’t expect Laporta to actually try to get a CDM, CB all together before selling and Sergio will play as a first team starter for at least 1 season and it is going to be rare if not impossible a CDM joins the club to play as a second CDM, Barcelona has been linked to a few players and it is reported that Koeman wants a strong figure in the midfield but there are no as such concrete Sources confirming anything.

Nico Gonzalez will be the best solution as Moriba, Frenkie both can play as a CDM bringing in Nico from the B team will help him get game time as well as help the team. Barcelona will look to use funds in other important positions.
