A few weeks ago, this looked like a foregone conclusion. Madrid had already moved to sign Marc Cucurella from Chelsea as a signal of intent.
Then, seemingly overnight, everything flipped.
The Moment It Changed
According to a wave of reports from MARCA, Fabrizio Romano, Fabrice Hawkins, The Athletic, and ESPN, Rodri has given Barcelona the green light to open formal talks with Manchester City, with the midfielder’s stated preference now being a move to Camp Nou rather than the Bernabeu. Some reports go further, suggesting personal terms have already been agreed between player and club, with Barcelona now working to negotiate a fee with City.
City are said to want Rodri to sign a new deal and lead the club into a new era under Enzo Maresca, but with just one year left on his contract, the door to a move this summer has stayed open, and Rodri has made clear he wants to return to Spain rather than extend his stay in Manchester.
Why Barcelona Won Him Over
So what actually changed his mind? A few factors keep coming up across the reporting.
The dressing room fit. Sources close to the deal point to how many familiar faces Rodri would walk into at Barcelona. Eight members of Spain’s World Cup-winning squad already play there, Joan Garcia, Eric Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Pedri, Ferran Torres, and Lamine Yamal, giving Rodri an unusually smooth path to settling in.
The football itself. Barcelona’s style of play is reportedly a major pull, with the club’s possession-based system seen as a more natural fit for Rodri’s game than what Real Madrid could offer.
The timing. Frenkie de Jong’s injury has opened up a genuine need in Barcelona’s midfield, giving the club both the sporting justification and the internal belief that there’s real space for Rodri to walk straight into a starting role.
The relationships. Rodri is said to already have good relationships with people inside the Camp Nou dressing room, something that reportedly carried real weight in his decision-making.
Real Madrid Aren’t Out Yet
It’s worth being clear about where things actually stand. Nothing is signed, sealed, and confirmed. ESPN reports that Madrid cannot be entirely ruled out of the race, and Rodri himself has been described as open to either Spanish giant. Rodri is also currently recovering from back surgery following the World Cup, expected to miss City’s Community Shield clash with Arsenal and their Premier League opener, a timeline that could still affect how quickly any deal comes together.
But the momentum has clearly swung. What looked like a near-certain Bernabeu arrival just weeks ago now looks like a genuine Barcelona lead in the race, and reports out of Spain increasingly suggest that Madrid have been left with a heavy blow to swallow.
What It Would Mean for Barça
Landing Rodri would be one of the biggest statements Barcelona could make this summer. A Ballon d’Or winner and Spain’s World Cup-winning captain walking into Camp Nou instead of the Bernabeu isn’t just a transfer, it’s a message about where the balance of power in Spanish football currently sits. Paired with the returning World Cup winners already at the club, a Rodri arrival would give Hansi Flick one of the most talent-stacked midfields in Europe.
