Xavi Espart is again appearing in an important file inside FC Barcelona. Racing Santander will try to sign him this summer, most likely on loan. The Cantabrian club already asked for him in January, but Barça stopped the operation.
That decision was not accidental, because Hansi Flick and Deco wanted him close. The right-back had started attracting attention through his maturity and personality. Now, with Racing newly promoted to LaLiga, the scenario opens again strongly.
Racing return with stronger arguments
Racing Santander already saw Espart as an interesting opportunity during the winter market. They wanted a young, technical full-back ready to grow with demanding minutes. Back then, the loan failed because Barça prioritised his development at home.
The situation has changed because the Cantabrian club will now compete in LaLiga. That makes a possible loan much more attractive for every party involved. Espart would get top-flight minutes, competitive rhythm and an ideal showcase.
For Racing, the operation would be an ambitious move after winning promotion. The team need young talent, hunger and quick adaptation to survive. Espart fits through profile, age and a blaugrana education with tactical intelligence.
Flick does not want to lose sight of him
The big problem for Racing is Barça’s internal valuation of Espart. Flick has been very satisfied with his evolution and wants patience. The German coach even compared him to Philipp Lahm because of his confidence on the ball.
That comparison does not mean Espart has a guaranteed first-team place. But it does show the staff see very special qualities in him. His background as a midfielder explains the calmness he shows in build-up.
Barça believe his development must be measured carefully during the blaugrana preseason. Flick wants to watch him with the first team before deciding anything. If he responds well, he could stay as an internal right-back alternative.
A position with heavy competition
Right-back remains a position with several important names inside Barça’s squad. Jules Koundé starts as the reference through experience, physique and recent performances. Héctor Fort will also have chances to convince Flick during the summer.
That context could open the door to a loan if minutes are limited. Barça do not want to slow an academy player who needs regular competition. A full season in LaLiga could accelerate his maturity much faster.
The key will be balancing his development with Barça’s sporting control. The club highly value keeping him close to Flick’s daily methodology. But playing every week in LaLiga could also become a huge jump.
Preseason will decide his future
Everything suggests Barça will decide after watching him during preseason. If Flick believes he has space, Racing will have very few options. But without an immediate role, a well-structured loan would make real sense.
Espart is not just another player inside La Masia, because his profile is unusual. He has technique, tactical intelligence and rare confidence for his age. That is why Barça do not want to rush a decision they may regret.
Racing will return with a much stronger sporting proposal than in January. Barça will listen, but first they want to know what Espart can offer. The twist is clear: Racing’s promotion opens the door, but Flick will have the final word.
Caution note: At the time of writing, there is no official agreement between Barça, Racing Santander and Xavi Espart.
