Bernardo Silva has once again appeared on FC Barcelona’s radar ahead of the upcoming transfer market. The reason is obvious: Manchester City officially renewed him in 2023 only until the summer of 2026, meaning that if no new agreement is signed, he will become a free agent at the end of the season. That situation transforms what was historically a very difficult signing into a much more attractive market opportunity for Europe’s biggest clubs.
The context also feeds the feeling of an approaching end of cycle. In recent days, both the Premier League and El País have placed Bernardo in a clear farewell atmosphere, with emotional scenes before his final match for City and a strong sense that his Manchester chapter is coming to a close. That alone does not confirm a destination, but it does reinforce the idea that the Portuguese midfielder is entering a decisive phase of his career.
An obvious opportunity, but not an immediate necessity
For Barça, the biggest advantage of this operation is clear: there would be no transfer fee. However, arriving for free does not mean arriving cheaply. In a deal like this, the real financial weight would come from salary, signing bonuses and contract length. That is why, even if it looks like a bargain on paper, internally the club cannot treat it as a minor move.
The biggest obstacle is not only money, though. It is also the sporting plan. Right now, Barça’s midfield already includes names such as Pedri, Gavi, Fermín López, Dani Olmo, Frenkie de Jong, Marc Casadó and Marc Bernal. That concentration of talent explains why adding another midfielder is not automatically viewed as an absolute priority.
Flick has the final word
That is the decisive point of the entire story. Hansi Flick has just renewed with Barça, and his influence over squad construction will be total. If the German coach believes the midfield is already covered, any market opportunity — no matter how attractive — will immediately move into the background.
That does not mean Bernardo Silva is not admired. Quite the opposite. His profile remains elite level: European experience, the ability to play inside or outside, composure, final pass quality and a competitive personality that would fit perfectly in a top club. But there is a major difference between being attractive and being considered essential by the coach.
Bernardo wants to leave and Barça remain there
The most positive aspect for Barça is the player’s own predisposition. The feeling around Bernardo’s recent movements is that he is ready to close his Manchester City chapter after many years, and Barça have always been one of the destinations that especially appeal to him. That willingness could keep the operation alive even if it is not the number one priority of the summer.
The conclusion inside the Spotify Camp Nou is becoming increasingly clear. Bernardo Silva is once again a real market opportunity because his contract expires in 2026 and he could arrive for free. But Barça will not decide based only on price. Everything will depend on whether Flick believes it is worth opening salary space for another midfielder in a squad already overflowing with talent in central areas.
