The name of Julián Álvarez is once again gaining strong traction at FC Barcelona ahead of the summer window. According to the latest information, the Argentine would be very open to joining Barça and even prioritizes them over other offers. Clubs like Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal FC are also in the race, but his preference is clear.
Inside Barça, there is a feeling that reaching an agreement with the player would not be the main obstacle. His sporting and personal fit is seen as very natural. The real problem lies in Madrid, where Atlético de Madrid are not willing to negotiate easily.
That is the biggest barrier in an operation that has long been highly attractive within the club. The striker signed with Atlético until 2030, which strengthens their position significantly. They consider him a key piece of their long-term project.
A perfect fit for Flick’s attacking system
From a tactical perspective, Julián offers almost everything Hansi Flick is looking for. He can play as a central striker, drop deeper, and attack spaces with constant intensity. He also presses high, combines well, and maintains high tempo throughout matches.
This profile makes him extremely appealing for a Barça squad that needs more energy in attack. After the Champions League disappointment, the club wants players with hunger, mobility, and competitive edge. Julián brings all of that, plus experience in big matches.
He is not just a talent with potential, but a proven performer. His mentality and ability to take responsibility in key moments stand out. That combination makes him a top-tier target.
A deal blocked by price and contract
His market value also explains why this deal is so complicated. Current estimates place him around 90 million euros. If Atlético are not willing to sell, the price could rise even higher.
Barça believe convincing the player would be the easiest part. The real challenge starts when negotiations with Atlético begin. Dealing with a direct rival holding a long-term contract makes everything much harder.
On top of that, Barça’s financial situation adds another layer of difficulty. The club must operate within strict Fair Play limits. Any move of this magnitude would require major sales and salary adjustments.
A dream signing… but a complex reality
Atlético have shown no intention of opening the door. Julián arrived in 2024 as a strategic signing for the future. Since then, he has been positioned as a central figure in their attack.
At Barça, they clearly separate two ideas. The first is exciting: the player wants to join and sees the club as his ideal destination. The second is harsh: convincing Atlético will be an extremely difficult battle.
The player’s desire can help, but it does not guarantee anything. With a contract until 2030, the selling club controls the situation. Especially when the negotiation involves a direct LaLiga rival.
Barça know they are targeting a striker who could elevate the entire project. But they also understand the reality. Julián Álvarez may want Barça — but signing him could be one of the toughest deals of the summer.
