The future of Marc-André ter Stegen is becoming complicated again inside Barcelona’s summer planning. The goalkeeper still has two years left on his contract, but his situation is far from resolved. Inside the club, the most likely outcome right now is another loan move.
The main reason remains a very sensitive point for Barça’s finances. The club are still covering a large part of his salary, which remains extremely high. That makes any permanent transfer very difficult to complete in the current market.
At the same time, the player himself needs something he does not fully have at Barça right now. Ter Stegen wants to play regularly and feel important in the competitive routine. If nothing changes significantly, his departure will be activated again in the coming months.
A permanent transfer looks very unlikely
Inside Barcelona, they understand that a sale would be the cleanest solution from a financial perspective. It would free up wages, clarify the goalkeeping situation and help plan next season. However, that scenario currently looks very difficult to achieve.
The first problem is finding a club willing to pay a significant transfer fee. The second, even more complicated, is finding a team ready to match his high salary. That combination makes a permanent move unlikely at this stage.
Because of that, the club see a loan as the most realistic path again. It would not be a perfect solution, since Barça would still need to cover part of his wages. But it would reduce the financial burden and give the player the minutes he is looking for.
The goalkeeping situation remains delicate
Ter Stegen’s case confirms that the goalkeeping position will be one of the most sensitive issues this summer. Barcelona want to make key decisions across the squad, and this area is no exception. The German goalkeeper’s situation is one of the most complex files on the table.
This is not a simple or quick exit to resolve because of his contract and salary conditions. However, everything is pointing towards a temporary solution away from the club. If no club commits to a transfer, the loan route becomes increasingly inevitable.
The sporting department also knows that delaying the decision could complicate other plans. Organising the squad early is important for Flick ahead of a demanding season. That adds even more pressure to find a workable solution.
Another loan becomes the most likely outcome
The conclusion inside Barcelona is becoming quite clear with this scenario. Ter Stegen still has a contract and remains an important name, but his continuity is losing strength. The combination of salary, competition and market conditions is pushing him towards the exit.
Unless a surprising offer appears, another loan is currently the most realistic outcome. It would allow Barça to manage their finances while giving the player the role he is looking for. In the current context, it is the option that makes the most sense for all parties.
