Match Review : FC Barcelona vs Getafe (1-0)

Barca is back for another fixture, this time against Madrid based side Getafe.

Or as Barca supporters like to call them, the devilish army of Jose Bordalas.

In all seriousness though, Barca were faced with another opportunity to win in La Liga this season. A win would give them 7 wins out of 7 marches to start the league season, but would also make them the first club to reach or go past the 20 point mark this season.

How did they fare against a physical Getafe side? And did they reach those milestones?

Let’s find out.

First half

The first half wasn’t a bore by any means.

Barca got the game’s opening goal courtesy of Robert Lewandowski, who has been on a tear to start the 2024-2025 La Liga campaign.

This time it was a simple tap in for the Polish legend, who pounded on an empty net and did the job a poacher is supposed to do.

After this goal though, the action started to slow down a little bit. Barca had their chances, but they weren’t converting them, eerily similar to their previous form under Xavi. This allowed Getafe to stay within striking distance, and while it didn’t feel that way, the scoreboard tells all.

The big story in the first half though was Getafe and their physical play.

There were many fouls called on Getafe, many being rough challenges that you’d consider fine in your local Sunday league. But Barca fought through that and eventually got to halftime with a 1-0 lead.

They had much to improve on in the second half, mainly their ability to convert the chances they had missed. Luckily for them though, they had an entire half to do so.

Let’s see how they fared.

Second half

The second half was more so the same as the first.

Plenty of chances for Barca, but they just weren’t converting on them. Lamine Yamal almost scored a wonder goal, but others had far easier opportunities.

Raphinha missed an easy header in the second half, not even getting the shot on target. Eric Garcia missed the most blatant one of all, hoofing a point blank shot over the bar after a scramble in Getafe’s penalty area.

These missed chances allowed Getafe to stay within the game, even creating a very serious moment of danger in the closing moments. Luckily for Barca, the action didn’t turn into anything substantial, because Getafe’s ability to create shots — let alone finish — was as pitiful as you could imagine.

But the moments were there and they reminded Barca that they needed to put this match away very quickly.

They weren’t able to do that, but they were able to walk away with a hard fought 1-0 win, in a match that saw Barca look a little sluggish and tired.

Probably from the fixture congestion so early in the year. That’s what no depth and injuries can do to you all right.

Final word

This wasn’t a pretty win by any means, but with the injury crisis going on at the club and the lack of depth to cover, I think Barca will take it.

It won’t get much easier though, as Barca plays again on Saturday, before having another midweek match next week against Young Boys in the Champions League.

Tough stretch of fixtures, but this is why you play at Barca.

But seriously, the fixture congestion is ridiculous.

Barca’s next match

Barca’s next match will be on Saturday against Osasuna.

See you all then!
