Marcus Rashford is moving further away from FC Barcelona at a crucial stage of the summer transfer window. According to SPORT, Manchester United have rejected the latest proposal submitted by the Catalan club. A deal that seemed realistic just weeks ago is now entering a much more complicated phase.
Barça had hoped to keep the English forward after a positive season under Hansi Flick. However, the club are unwilling to pay the full amount included in the original agreement. Mundo Deportivo reports that Barcelona offered around €15 million, roughly half of the previously agreed purchase option.
Manchester United, meanwhile, remain firm on the original clause included in the loan deal. Several reports place that figure at around €30 million. The growing gap between the two clubs is turning what once looked like a straightforward operation into a difficult negotiation.
United refuse to back down
The Premier League side have no intention of giving Rashford away after seeing his value rise again in Barcelona. Although his future at Old Trafford remains uncertain, United believe the player has rebuilt his reputation and should command a significant fee.
Barcelona are trying to use the player’s desire to stay as leverage. Rashford has reportedly made it clear that he would like to continue at the Spotify Camp Nou and could even be willing to adjust his financial expectations. But that willingness alone is not enough if United continue to block any discount.
The situation leaves Deco facing a difficult decision. He can improve the offer, explore another loan formula or begin to move on entirely. The problem is that time is running out and other clubs are already monitoring the striker closely.
Gordon changes the picture
The arrival of Anthony Gordon has also altered Rashford’s place within Barcelona’s plans. The club have already made a major investment to strengthen the left wing, reducing the urgency to complete another deal for a player operating in similar areas.
Rashford brings pace, directness and goals, but many of his natural positions overlap with Gordon’s. Flick still appreciates his qualities, yet Barcelona must carefully decide where to allocate their financial resources. With a new centre-forward still considered a priority, committing another major investment to a similar profile becomes increasingly difficult.
The club also continue to work on ambitious attacking targets such as Julián Álvarez and João Pedro. Those operations remain higher on the priority list, pushing Rashford further down the market hierarchy.
The player wants to stay
The biggest factor still working in Barcelona’s favour is Rashford’s own desire. The England international has settled well in the city and reportedly has no interest in returning to Manchester. Both his sporting and personal adaptation strengthened the belief that a permanent stay was possible.
However, interest from elsewhere is growing. Reports suggest that clubs such as Bayern Munich, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa are all keeping a close eye on the situation. That gives United additional leverage, as they may be able to attract stronger offers from elsewhere.
The upcoming international period could also affect his valuation. If Rashford performs well for England, his market value may increase further. Barcelona therefore need to decide quickly whether they are still willing to fight for the deal.
A permanent move looks increasingly unlikely
The current situation no longer carries the optimism that surrounded the operation only a few weeks ago. Barcelona wanted a cheaper formula, but Manchester United are refusing to compromise. Without an agreement between clubs, the player’s wishes become secondary.
Deco must now decide whether continuing negotiations is worth the effort or whether resources should be redirected towards other priorities. Gordon has already strengthened the attack and the search for a new number nine remains ongoing.
The transfer is not completely dead, but it has undoubtedly cooled down. United remain firm, Barcelona do not want to pay €30 million and rival clubs are waiting for their opportunity. And that is the twist: Rashford wants to stay, but Manchester United are steadily pushing him further away from Barça.
Caution note: This article is based on media reports from SPORT, Mundo Deportivo and other outlets. At the time of writing, there is no official confirmation that Marcus Rashford will leave Barcelona permanently or that negotiations between FC Barcelona and Manchester United have definitively broken down.
