The signing of Alessandro Bastoni by Barcelona is entering an increasingly complicated phase. According to information attributed to Fabrizio Romano, the operation is currently blocked and is not advancing between the clubs. The difference in valuation with Inter Milan remains too large to close an agreement.
The Italian journalist also points out that Barça now have other priorities in attack. That detail changes the scenario quite a lot, because Deco must distribute resources in a very demanding market. At this moment, spending around €70 million on a defender does not look like a Barça priority.
That does not mean Bastoni has stopped being liked inside the Catalan club. The Italian centre-back has been linked with Barça for months because of his left foot, ball progression and elite-level experience. But the price, economic context and Inter’s firm stance have cooled the operation massively.
An increasingly difficult operation
Inter have a very strong position because Bastoni is under contract until June 2028. The Italian club announced a long renewal in 2023 to protect the defender. That contract length allows them to negotiate without urgency and demand a very high fee.
Reports published in recent weeks placed his valuation close to €70 million. That distance between what Inter want and what Barça would accept is decisive in understanding why the operation is not progressing. Without a middle ground, the case is practically frozen.
It has also been suggested that Barça have not presented a formal offer for the player. Another important detail is that Bastoni has not forced an exit from Inter either. Without pressure from the footballer, the margin to lower the price becomes even smaller.
Deco now looks elsewhere
The sporting context also pushes Barça to look first at the attacking area. The striker and winger positions remain the most urgent files in next summer’s planning. That conditions any major investment in a defence that already has several names.
Hansi Flick’s continuity also influences that market reading. The coach wants to build a balanced squad, but the club cannot afford mistakes in huge operations. Every move must therefore be measured carefully before committing such a large part of the financial margin.
That explains the caution around a player like Bastoni. The centre-back is highly rated, yes, but Barça do not want to take on such a heavy operation while other positions weigh more in the roadmap. That is where the Italian loses strength in the Catalan market.
Bastoni is liked, but the price rules
Football-wise, Bastoni still fits many of the things Barça are looking for. He has the ideal age, experience, hierarchy and a highly valued left foot to build from the back. He could offer exactly the left-sided centre-back profile that is so difficult to find.
However, the market matters much more than sporting taste. Inter have no need to sell and consider the Italian a structural piece of their defence. Any exit would therefore require a very powerful offer and a much clearer will from the player.
The conclusion at Camp Nou is becoming quite clear with this situation on the table. Bastoni is still liked, but the operation is blocked by price and priorities. If nothing changes soon, the Inter centre-back could end up falling definitively off Barça’s list.
Caution note: this situation is based on reported information attributed to Fabrizio Romano and market planning, not an official decision announced by Barcelona or Inter Milan.
