The World Cup-winning defender continues to impress Barcelona, but the sporting department has established a different priority before considering his signing.
FC Barcelona continue shaping the final stages of their transfer window strategy. Among the defenders admired by the club is Cristian “Cuti” Romero, whose profile fits what Hansi Flick wants in his backline. However, Deco has a different priority before pursuing the Argentine.
Cuti Romero continues to impress Barça
The Tottenham Hotspur centre-back has long been highly rated by Barcelona’s sporting department. His leadership, defensive intensity and experience at the highest level make him an attractive option. He is viewed as a player capable of strengthening the team’s defensive core.
Despite that admiration, the interest has not developed into advanced negotiations. According to recent reports, Barça continue monitoring his situation without planning an immediate move. Other areas of the squad currently demand greater attention.
A left-footed centre-back is the priority
Before launching an approach for Cristian Romero, Barcelona reportedly want to sign a left-footed centre-back. The club believes that position is more urgent for balancing Hansi Flick’s defensive structure. It remains the main objective in the current transfer plan.
For that reason, Deco is concentrating his efforts on identifying the right profile. Only after resolving that priority could the club reconsider a move for Romero. The sporting department continues evaluating the market with patience.
The transfer window remains wide open
Barcelona’s plans could still change depending on opportunities that emerge in the coming weeks. Player departures, financial flexibility and market conditions will continue shaping the club’s decisions. Every move must also fit within Financial Fair Play requirements.
For now, Cristian “Cuti” Romero remains a highly valued option but not the club’s top defensive target. The twist is clear: Deco admires the World Cup winner, but Barça will first focus on signing a left-footed centre-back before revisiting the Romero operation.
Caution note: At the time of writing, there is no official agreement between FC Barcelona, Cristian Romero, and Tottenham Hotspur, and the reported interest has not progressed into formal transfer negotiations.
