Sergiño Dest has once again crossed paths with FC Barcelona in the middle of the summer market. According to Matteo Moretto, Bayern Munich are interested in signing the PSV Eindhoven full-back. The operation would not affect Barça on a sporting level, but it could have an economic impact.
The American full-back left the blaugrana club permanently in the summer of 2024. Barça reached an agreement with PSV for his definitive transfer after his loan spell in the Netherlands. In that deal, the Catalan club kept a percentage of a future sale.
That clause could now become a small boost for Barça’s accounts. If Bayern end up making a move for Dest, Barcelona would be entitled to part of the fee. It would not be a decisive amount, but it could still be a useful sum in a very demanding market.
Bayern return for Dest
Bayern’s interest has not appeared out of nowhere, because Dest had already been on their radar in the past. The German club wanted the full-back before he signed for Barcelona in 2020. Now, several years later, his name has returned as an option to strengthen their full-back positions.
According to reports in Germany, Bayern are also following Ismael Saibari, Dest’s teammate at PSV. The Bavarian idea would be to review several opportunities in Eindhoven during the summer. Dest is attractive because of his ability to play on both defensive flanks.
The American can operate as a right-back and also as a left-back in certain contexts. That versatility is very valuable for a team that needs depth on both sides. He also arrives after a strong season in the Netherlands.
PSV value him highly
PSV have no need to sell Dest for a low fee this summer. The player has a contract until 2028, which gives the Dutch club a strong negotiating position. That means any exit would require an offer that truly convinces them.
Bavarian Football Works reports that his price could be between €20 million and €25 million. Barça Blaugranes, meanwhile, places his valuation closer to €18 million. In any case, Barça will be watching closely because they still hold around 20%.
That percentage could bring in an interesting amount if the operation materialises. If Dest is sold for €20 million, Barça could earn around €4 million. If the figure rises to €25 million, the blaugrana share could get close to €5 million.
A well-protected deal
Barcelona officially announced Dest’s permanent transfer to PSV in 2024. In that statement, the club explained that they retained a percentage of any future sale. That detail shows that Barça did not want to fully give up on his possible future revaluation.
That decision could now be rewarded, because Dest has rebuilt his value in Eindhoven. Reuters reported that the full-back was important in PSV’s league title during his loan spell. After a serious injury, he found confidence, continuity and a stable environment there.
The player himself has also recently made it clear that he does not rule out competing again at the highest level. Barça Blaugranes even picked up his comments about a possible fit in Flick’s Barça. Even so, the current scenario points more towards a sale to another European giant.
An income that helps the market
Barça are forced to scrape money from many parallel operations this summer. Signings, renewals, registrations and salary margin make every income valuable. That is why even a figure of four or five million euros could be useful.
It would not be a direct sale or an operation capable of changing Deco’s entire planning. But it would be another example of how retained percentages can generate future benefits. In such a tight market, these types of clauses can end up being important.
The outcome will depend on whether Bayern move from interest to a formal offer for Dest. PSV know they have a player with a contract, market value and recent strong performances. And that is the twist: Dest no longer plays for Barça, but he could still bring them money.
