After months of reports, the announcement of Jordi Alba’s renewal finally arrived. The renewal will secure the Barca Left Back position until 2024. However, the club looks for options to be his backup next season.
Our left back position is one of our squad’s main problems this season. Valverde tried to play with Vermaelen, Sergi Roberto, Semedo and Miranda in that position. However, every time Jordi Alba didn’t play, his absence was massive.
Our current backup at Barca left back postiion
At first, it seemed Alba’s backup will be either Cucurella or Miranda. After the preseason, Miranda was the “chosen one”, and Cucu moved to Eibar on loan. However, for now, Miranda seems too inexperienced, and Cucu’s great season with Eibar doesn’t seems to convince the club. In addition, with the interest Cucu is having from clubs like Dortmund or Milan, it that he will be sold.
Short term backup for Alba
Regarding Jordi Alba’s back-up, Barcelona will try to sign an experienced left back on a deal for up to two years. The idea is to reserve a buy back option for Cucurella and loan out Miranda to a first division team (possibly to Betis). Alba and an experienced LB will cover the Barca Left Back position .
According to a report by ‘SPORT‘, Barca will explore the market fir experienced low cost left back options. The first option seems to be Atletico’s Filipe Luis. The second option is Nacho Monreal from Arsenal. The third option is Alberto Moreno from Liverpool.
With Miranda’s possible departure, Barcelona are planning to sign a promising left back for the B team, someone who can make the jump to the first team in the future. Palmeiras player Luan Cândido (18) is one of the options.
Barca has the left back secured for the next few years. Alba will be the first option, with the backup of an experienced LB. In addition, the team will have three options as long term replacements. Miranda/Cucu should be ready after the experienced LB will leave.
